Introduction

Amtrak has commenced construction on a new train maintenance facility at Southampton Yard in Boston, with the project slated for phased opening and full completion anticipated by 2029. This initiative involves collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, and the Rail Passenger Association.

Project Scope and Purpose

The new facility is designed for routine inspections, servicing, and cleaning of trains operating on key routes. These routes include the Northeast Regional between Boston and Washington, and the Amtrak Downeaster between Boston and Brunswick, Maine.

Facility Details

The Southampton rail yard modernisation project will include an 860ft-long building, encompassing over 60,000ft² within the existing yard. The facility will feature a two-bay maintenance and inspection area equipped with inspection pits, drop tables, sanding systems, and fuelling pads. In addition, an existing two-track service and inspection facility will be renovated.

Infrastructure and Equipment Upgrades

Infrastructure upgrades for the Southampton rail yard modernisation project will include new direct fixation track within maintenance, inspection, service, and cleaning areas, and the replacement of catenary power structures. Additional improvements include storage tracks for both Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Amtrak equipment, new retaining walls, utility relocations, and an expanded yardmaster’s operations area. The facility, upon completion, will accommodate Acela and Long Distance trains, linking Boston with cities like Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, and Richmond.

Modernization and Expansion Plans

This development is part of a larger modernization initiative by Amtrak, encompassing over 20 rail yards and facilities along more than a dozen routes. Similar projects are already underway in Philadelphia, Seattle, and Washington DC. Amtrak also has plans to construct or upgrade layover sites outside the Northeast Corridor at locations including Richmond, Newport News, Norfolk, and Roanoke in Virginia.
