Introduction

Metrolink has expanded its wireless crossing nearside station stop (WCNSS) technology to two grade crossings near the Baldwin Park Station in Los Angeles County, with the system going live on Oct. 13. This expansion follows successful testing of the technology in four other counties.

Implementation in Los Angeles County

On Oct. 13, the WCNSS technology was activated at two crossings near the Baldwin Park Station in Los Angeles County. This technology is designed to communicate in real time with Metrolink’s positive train control (PTC) network.

Functionality of WCNSS Technology

The WCNSS technology activates crossing gates only when necessary. Previously, the gates at these crossings would activate multiple times when westbound trains were in the vicinity, including when stopped at a station. This caused increased traffic congestion.

Previous Deployments of WCNSS

Metrolink introduced WCNSS technology at a crossing in Orange County’s San Juan Capistrano in June 2024. During its first year of operation, the technology prevented 1,584 unnecessary gate activations and saved 36 hours of traffic delays. The technology has since been installed in San Bernardino, Riverside, and Ventura counties.

Conclusion

Metrolink has expanded the WCNSS technology to Los Angeles County after successful deployments in Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Ventura counties. The technology is designed to reduce traffic congestion by activating crossing gates only when trains are approaching.
