Introduction
Regiobahn will introduce Siemens Mobility Mireo Smart Plus B battery trains on the RE 47 line between Remscheid-Lennep and Düsseldorf Central Station from summer 2026, marking a significant step towards climate-neutral mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).
Project Overview
The new low-emission Mireo Smart Plus B battery trains for Regiobahn were presented at Siemens Mobility’s test centre in Wegberg-Wildenrath. The three two-car battery trains from Siemens Mobility are set to replace the diesel vehicles currently operating on the RE 47 line. The trains have a range of up to 120 kilometers and a top speed of 140 km/h.
Key Personnel and Partnerships
The unveiling was attended by Alexandra Westerkamp, Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board at Regiobahn and Head of Department at Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), Christina Zoller, CFO of Smart Train Lease, Ben Dobernecker, CEO of Smart Train Lease, Rolf Ommen, Head of Department at VRR, and Götz Nink, Managing Director of Regiobahn. The procurement of the trains was achieved through collaboration with Smart Train Lease.
Operational and Passenger Benefits
Götz Nink, Managing Director of Regiobahn, stated the trains offer a reliable alternative for passengers on the RE 47 line. The Mireo Smart Plus B trains feature 122 seats, including a first-class area with eight seats, multi-purpose areas, free WiFi, barrier-free access, and a quiet ride. Additional features include 12 bicycle spaces, power outlets, USB charging points, and Siemens Mobility’s high-frequency window solution for improved mobile phone reception.
Technical and Maintenance Aspects
The trains’ batteries can be charged while driving or stationary, eliminating the need for extra charging infrastructure. Silicon carbide technology (SiC) is used to reduce energy consumption. Siemens Mobility will handle long-term maintenance under a full-service contract at the Dortmund Rail Service Centre, using the Railigent X digital platform for monitoring.
Conclusion
The introduction of the Mireo Smart Plus B battery trains represents a move towards reducing CO2 emissions in public transport and is a result of the collaboration between Siemens Mobility, Smart Train Lease, Regiobahn, and VRR. The trains combine passenger comfort with environmental efficiency and economic viability.
