UK Rail Trials: Digital Ticketing on Northern & East Midlands Trains
UK railways launch digital ticketing trials, using phone apps for seamless travel on East Midlands and Northern routes.

Introduction
Digital ticketing trials have commenced on UK railways, allowing passengers to utilize a phone app for seamless check-in and check-out, with automatic fare calculation. The trials, which began on 1 September 2025, include services between Leicester, Derby, and Nottingham, with further expansions on Northern Trains services in Yorkshire scheduled from the end of September.
Trial Launch and Implementation
The digital ticketing trials enable passengers to use a location-identifying app on their phones for a streamlined check-in and check-out process. The app employs GPS technology to monitor journeys and automatically apply the best fare at the end of the day. A unique barcode displayed within the app is scanned for ticket inspections and barrier access.
Geographic Scope and Participation
The initial phase of the trials covers routes within the East Midlands. Passengers can participate in the East Midlands Rail trial or on Northern services to Harrogate, Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster, and Barnsley. Up to 4,000 passengers can participate by registering on the respective train operator’s website.
Technological and Operational Details
This technology replaces paper tickets and mobile QR code tickets purchased online or via apps. Passengers are no longer required to pre-book journeys, as the app tracks their trips and identifies when they exit the rail network. The technology has previously been tested in Switzerland, Denmark, and Scotland.
Statements and Objectives
Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy emphasized the need to modernize the railway ticketing system. Oli Cox, Head of Commercial Strategy and Business Planning at East Midlands Railway, highlighted the positive customer response. Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, expressed her ambition to introduce integrated, tap-on-and-off ticketing across the region. Alex Hornby, Commercial and Customer Director at Northern, stated that these trials mark an important step forward in simplifying rail travel.
Conclusion
The trials are supported by nearly £1 million in government funding and are part of a broader plan to modernize the transport system. The initiative aims to enhance passenger experience and encourage rail travel, with the government’s Plan for Change.
