Introduction

DB Regio Mitte has commenced passenger trials of its new Stadler FLIRT3 XL (class 3428) trains on the MoselLux network, with the first of 19 units operating scheduled services on RB 81 (Trier–Koblenz) and RB 82 (Trier–Perl) since 9 October 2025.

Operational Testing and Trials

The passenger trials are part of the contractual testing and commissioning process agreed with transport authorities. Each week, the new trains will cover around 2,500 additional test kilometres, supplementing the 5,000 kilometres already completed during technical trials.

Fleet Deployment and Network

Stadler is delivering 19 four-car FLIRT3 XL units for the MoselLux network, serving the RB 81 and RB 82 routes. Following electrification, the trains will also operate on the Moselweinbahn (Traben-Trarbach–Bullay). The project is commissioned by the Schienenpersonennahverkehr Rheinland-Pfalz Nord (SPNV-Nord) and the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of Saarland.

Project Progress and Collaboration

Eight trains have been delivered, and type approval was granted at the end of July. Driver training is progressing rapidly. According to Thorsten Müller, Managing Director of SPNV-Nord, pragmatic solutions have been found to compensate for delays. Holger Maier, MoselLux Vehicles Project Manager at SPNV-Nord, stated that the start of passenger operation marks a significant milestone in the new MoselLux service.

Features and Amenities

Each four-car train can accommodate up to 507 passengers, including 245 seated (20 in first class). They feature power sockets, CCTV, free Wi-Fi, and a passenger information system. The trains offer spaces for up to 30 bicycles, wheelchairs, and prams. The MoselLux fleet includes a “one-way system” for bicycles, with each end car having two doors per side. The trains have seven doors per side and a fully walk-through design with two toilets, one of which is accessible.
