Sofia Metro Line 1 Opened

The Bulgarian capital city of Sofia has opened the last section of its Metro Line 1.

The 2km rail section runs from Sveta Nedelia square to the national football ground Vassil Levski in Lyulin, connecting the region’s eastern and western boroughs.
The section, covering one station, connects to the city metro’s initial Obelya-Serdika section taking the route from Mladost 1 to Vasil Levski.
The section has been funded with a $104m loan from the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation.
With the new section, the city’s Metro Line 1 project is now finished. It totals 18km, covers 14 stations, and connects Mladost 1 in the south-east with Lyulin and Obelya in the west, via the city centre.
Work is in progress on a further €94m extension of the line from Mladost 1 to the International Exhibition Centre on Tsarigradsko Shose and is expected to finish in 2012.
A third line has also been planned.
