A consortium led by Spanish infrastructure group Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) has won a $1.45bn contract to build Line 1 of the metro subway line in Panama.

FCC, together with Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, with trainsets from Alstom, won the contract over Italian-led consortium Impregilo, Ghella and Astaldi, with trainsets from AnsaldoBreda.

Panama’s 14km-long metro will have 11 stations, with some of the stations above ground. Work on the project will begin in January 2011.
