Network Rail commissioned upgraded infrastructure at Mirfield station on 30 January. The new assets include a footbridge with lifts, providing step-free access between platforms. The project also delivered lengthened platforms designed to accommodate longer train formations.

The work at Mirfield is part of the wider Transpennine Route Upgrade, a programme to increase capacity and improve services between Manchester, Leeds, and York. Stakeholders in the station project include the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Kirklees Council, and train operator Northern.

These station modifications are a prerequisite for the planned four-tracking of the railway line. This future phase will add two additional fast lines, enabling express trains to bypass local stopping services. Subsequent stages of the programme include station upgrades at Batley and Dewsbury.
