Mitsubishi Electric’s Indian subsidiary has opened a new factory for transportation systems in Bidadi, near Bengaluru, India.

The company is targeting annual revenues of $170m from the transportation systems business in India by fiscal 2020, by enhancing sales and maintenance services for subways and trains.

Mitsubishi Electric public utility systems executive officer and group president Takahiro Kikuchi previously said: “The Indian market is growing rapidly, fueled by the country’s increasing population and rising demands for eco-friendly mass transportation systems.”

Mitsubishi Electric initially offered Indian customers with electrical products for locomotives, and later expanded into rolling stock equipment business for metro projects.

The company currently provides about 65% traction systems of the nation’s metro rail networks.

The new $8m Bidadi factory will produce traction inverters, motors and other electrical equipment for rolling stock for metro systems, and assemble electrical propulsion equipment for rolling stock. It also has equipment maintenance facility.

This is the company’s third manufacturing facility in India, following plants for automotive equipment and factory automation products in Gurgaon and Pune, respectively.
