Milan Awards Driverless Metro Contract
Milan City Council, Italy, has provisionally selected a joint venture comprising Impregilo, Astaldi, Ansaldo STS, AnsaldoBreda, Sirti and ATM to build Line 4 of the Milan metro system.
The underground metro line, which will be driverless and fully automated, will stretch 15.2km from Linate to Lorenteggio.
The project involves the detailed and executive design and construction of two single-track tunnels, one in each direction, with 21 stations and a depot.
The project will cost €1.7bn, of which two-thirds will be funded by the Italian State and Milan City Council. The contract includes a concession for 30 years, with six and a half years for engineering and construction works, and the remaining 23.5 years for the operating phase.
The project envisages total operating revenues of €2.7bn calculated on the basis of a minimum traffic of 86 million passengers per year guaranteed by Milan City Council.
