On September 12, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and local officials celebrated the completion of nine grade crossing improvement projects in Long Beach, Mississippi.

Project Overview

The Long Beach project marks the first city-wide grade crossing improvement program initiated by MDOT. A similar project in Pass Christian is currently in the design phase.

The improvements in Long Beach involved raising roadway approaches at all nine crossings to mitigate the risk of vehicles becoming stranded on the tracks.

The projects were financed through the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway-Rail Crossing Safety grant program. Neel-Schaffer was contracted to provide preliminary engineering, construction engineering, and inspection services. Moran Hauling Inc. of Gulfport was awarded a $3 million contract for the projects.
