Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has extended the bidding deadline for a new cross-country line to run between the port city of Mombasa and Kampala, Uganda, to 2 December 2010.

The bidding deadline had previously been set for 27 October, and KRC has asked the firms that have already placed bids to resubmit them.
The proposed Mombasa-Kampala railway line is expected to increase intra-regional trade and encourage road freight to be transferred to rail.
Kenya Railways has invited bids for consultancy services for preliminary design, and for an environmental and social assessment of the section ending at the Kenyan border.
The standard gauge railway line will be built to meet the increasing transport demands in the region, according to Reuters.
All studies for the line are scheduled to be complete by March 2011. Construction should begin in November 2011, and it is expected to be completed within three years.
