Ireland has completed the 4.2km extension of Dublin’s Luas light rail network by expanding the Red Line from Belgard to Saggart in west Tallaght.

The €150m rail line will have five stations and a 312-space park-and-ride stop at Cheeverstown, which is expected to increase passenger numbers on the Luas network by two million to almost 30 million.

The project was jointly funded by the Railway Procurement Agency of Ireland and a group of private landowners that includes Davy Hickey Properties, Harcourt Development and HSS (Mansfield Group).

Ireland is planning to build a link between the Red and Green lines and the Metro North project at the end of September as part of a new National Development Plan.
