The unveiling of the Velaro high-speed train occurred at the TransMEA exhibition, attended by Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Siemens AG President and CEO Roland Busch, Siemens Mobility CEO Michael Peter, and other guests. The project, developed in partnership with Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction, aims to connect millions of people with fast, reliable, and sustainable transport. The Egyptian high-speed network spans 2,000 kilometers, connecting Cairo, Ain Sokhna, Alexandria, Marsa Matrouh, Luxor, and Aswan, serving nearly 90% of the population. Upon completion, it will be the sixth-largest high-speed rail system globally.
Velaro Train Specifications and Design Enhancements
The Velaro high-speed train, designed for Egypt’s desert conditions, can reach speeds of up to 250 km/h and can accommodate 489 passengers. Siemens Mobility optimized the train for maximum durability and performance in extreme climates. Engineers utilized Altair’s digital twin tools to enhance the design, addressing the effects of heat, sand, and dust through robust filtration and advanced cooling systems.
Desiro HC Regional Train and Route Details
The Desiro High-Capacity (HC) regional train completed its first test run west of Cairo. This train is designed for the Green Line, a 660-kilometer route linking Cairo with Ain Sokhna, Alexandria, and Marsa Matrouh. Each Desiro HC offers 849 passenger spaces, air conditioning, ETCS Level 2 train protection, wheelchair access, and a top speed of 160 km/h. The fleet includes 94 Desiro HC units.
Project Components and Maintenance
The high-speed project in Egypt will cover over 2,000 kilometers, linking key cities and industrial centers. The system will comprise 41 Velaro high-speed trains, 94 Desiro HC regional trains, and 41 Vectron locomotives, all supported by a 15-year Siemens Mobility maintenance commitment. The maintenance program will incorporate digital asset management, predictive maintenance, and workforce training.
