Introduction

CN announced progress on its partnership with Target Steel Inc. to establish a steel transload logistics facility in Flat Rock, Michigan. The facility, opened in May 2024, addresses the logistical requirements of the southeast Michigan automotive supply chain by shifting deliveries from long-haul trucking to rail.

Facility Development and Funding

The Flat Rock facility was developed with financial support from the Michigan Department of Transportation. Its strategic location and design aim to support both current operations and future expansion.

Operational Efficiency

The primary function of the facility is to improve operational efficiency by transferring steel coil deliveries from trucking to rail transport. Steel coils are delivered by rail and then transloaded onto trucks for final distribution. This approach supports the just-in-time delivery models essential for the automotive manufacturing sector.

Impact and Results

Since the facility’s opening in May 2024, Target Steel has increased its use of rail transport. This shift has resulted in over 400 rail carloads being delivered and has reduced truck traffic on regional highways.
