Bombardier Transportation has delivered the first of 73 three-car Movia C951 driverless metro trains to Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) for use on the under-construction Downtown Line (DTL).

LTA expects to take delivery of another ten trains from Bombardier by the third quarter of 2013 to be used on the first stage of the DTL, which is scheduled to open in 2013.
The trains will be operated on the 3.4km section of DTL stage 1 between Bugis and Chinatown, which includes six stations.
The 90% recyclable driverless metro cars use propulsion technology with low energy consumption and optimised performance.
Bombardier Movia metro trains are designed for a maximum design speed of 90km/h and a maximum operational speed of 80km/h.
The Canadian manufacturer won an order worth €298m from the LTA in November 2008 to deliver 219 driverless Movia metro cars.
The contract includes the design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly, testing, commissioning and delivery of the driverless Movia metro vehicles.
The Movia trains are being assembled at Bombardier’s joint venture facility in Changchun, China and the delivery of the remaining trains is scheduled to be completed in mid-2016.
DTL’s 16.6km stage 2 from Bugis to Bukit Panjang is expected to be completed in 2015, while the 21km eastern section from Chinatown to Expo is scheduled to open in 2017.
Upon completion, the 42km DTL will be operated by SBS Transit and is expected to transport around half a million passengers every day.
