Adif’s ERTMS Trials in Spain: Boosting Rail Efficiency
Adif launches ERTMS trials on secondary lines, focusing on improving efficiency and capacity. The project will test Levels 1 & 2 for enhanced rail operations.

Introduction
Adif has initiated European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) trials on secondary lines, commencing with tests on the metre-gauge rail section between La Asunción Universidad station in León and Guardo. The trials, which began with checks on the ERTMS equipment’s odometry, are scheduled to conclude in the first half of 2026 and encompass both Level 1 and Level 2 ERTMS systems.
ERTMS Trials on Secondary Lines
Adif’s project focuses on deploying ERTMS on low-density railway lines. The trials are taking place on the La Asunción Universidad–Guardo section. The project will test ERTMS Level 2 using satellite train location/position and public telecommunications networks. Level 1 ERTMS trials are also included, focusing on new operating scenarios like level crossing management. The initial phase involved characterising regional lines and defining the pilot line, followed by equipment installation and dynamic testing.
Testing Schedule and Procedures
The system trials are planned for the first half of 2026. The initial tests have begun with checks to ensure the correct operation of the odometry or distance measurement – travelled of the ERTMS equipment installed on the train. The Level 1 ERTMS tests will precede the Level 2 tests in 2026. The new application of ERTMS Level 2 on the La Asunción Universidad–Guardo section is designed to require less trackside equipment.
Benefits and Objectives
The implementation initiative aims to leverage the advantages of the European standard on secondary lines. ERTMS is expected to improve service quality, performance, reliability, and efficiency. It also aims to increase transport capacity by reducing train intervals and lowering operating costs. The project is aligned with the European Commission’s roadmap for applying the ERTMS standard in GNSS-based satellite positioning.
Collaboration and European Context
Adif has been involved in European innovation projects like ERSAT GGC and RAILGAP, which focus on using satellite systems for rail traffic control. The ERTMS project on secondary lines aligns with the broader European strategy. Spain currently leads in ERTMS implementation within Europe, with over 3,000 kilometers in operation. The deployment of ERTMS on secondary lines has been limited due to high costs and compatibility issues.
Conclusion
Adif’s project on secondary lines involves testing ERTMS Level 1 and Level 2 on the La Asunción Universidad–Guardo section, aiming to improve service quality, capacity, and efficiency. The project is part of a wider European initiative to enhance rail traffic management, building on Spain’s existing ERTMS infrastructure.
