Introduction

New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) has approved over $917 million, plus a 10% contingency, to overhaul its fleet of 429 multilevel rail cars. This initiative aims to modernize the existing fleet, ensuring compatibility with the incoming 374 new multilevel III cars.

Fleet Overhaul Approval

NJ Transit’s board authorized the expenditure to address the midlife overhaul requirements for its multilevel rail car fleet. This includes both multilevel I and II cars, some of which have been in service for nearly two decades. The project will involve a total of 429 rail cars.

Procurement Process

The transit agency will utilize an Expression of Interest (EOI) process to select a contractor for the overhaul project. Potential contractors will submit their qualifications, capabilities, and relevant project experience. NJ Transit will then compile a list of qualified contractors to participate in the final procurement and contract award phases. The EOI is not yet accessible on NJ Transit’s website.

Scope of Work

The selected contractor will be responsible for overhauling 329 multilevel I cars, which were delivered between 2006 and 2009. Additionally, the contract includes the overhaul of 100 multilevel II vehicles, delivered between 2012 and 2013. The contractor’s scope will encompass ensuring the rail cars meet the standard of a state of good repair and upgrading systems to guarantee reliability and compatibility with the new multilevel III cars.
