Introduction

Region Stockholm (SL) has contracted Škoda Transportation to supply 16 new trains for the Saltsjöbanan line. The agreement, signed on 11 November at the Swedish Transport Administration’s headquarters, is part of a long-term modernization program for the commuter railway.

The contract with Škoda Transportation is valued at approximately SEK 1.56 billion. It includes the design, manufacture, and delivery of 16 new vehicles. Škoda Transportation, part of the Škoda Group, will manage the full engineering and production process.

Project Timeline

The joint design phase is set to begin in 2026, which will finalize the exterior and interior layouts. Production is planned to start in 2027. The first units are scheduled for delivery to Stockholm in 2029 for testing. Passenger service is expected to commence around the turn of the year 2029/2030, with a gradual phase-in as the existing fleet is retired.

Train Specifications

The new vehicles will be approximately 36 metres long, with the capability to operate up to three units coupled together, reaching a maximum length of 108 metres. Each vehicle will accommodate around 250 passengers, including 90 seated. The trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

Features and Longevity

The trains will be equipped with features designed to improve passenger experience. The new fleet is designed for a technical lifespan of 40 years. This project is part of a broader program to ensure the future viability of Saltsjöbanan and promote more sustainable mobility in Stockholm’s eastern suburbs.
