Introduction

ÖBB is undertaking a modernization and electrification project on the Mattersburg Railway, with a total investment of nearly EUR 143 million, with completion expected by the end of 2027.

Project Scope

The project encompasses electrification, station and stop modernization, and improved accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility. The line will be electrified between Wiener Neustadt Hauptbahnhof and Loipersbach-Schattendorf. Double tracking will be implemented from Wiener Neustadt Hbf to Katzelsdorf, as well as within Loipersbach-Schattendorf station. Adjustments will be made to the Wiesen-Sigleß and Mattersburg viaducts to accommodate overhead wiring. The project also includes the construction of technical rooms, switching stations, and signal buildings at various stations.

Station Upgrades and Accessibility

Six stations will be upgraded and modernized, including new platforms, improved accessibility, and full renewal of platform equipment. Park & Ride and Bike & Ride facilities will be built or expanded. Several level crossings will be removed and replaced with underpasses, and safety enhancements will be introduced at remaining crossings. These improvements aim to enhance passenger comfort and safety for both road and rail users.

Construction Phases and Service Adjustments

The next construction phase, from early October to the end of November 2025, will focus on piling work for overhead line masts. During this period, train services between Wiener Neustadt Hauptbahnhof and Sopron will be limited. In 2026, during the main construction phase from 9 February to 12 December, the Mattersburg Railway will be closed continuously, with rail replacement services provided to maintain connectivity. ÖBB aims to minimize disruption to nearby residents.

Expected Outcomes

Upon completion, the line will operate with 100% green electricity. Commuting times to Vienna will be reduced, and through-services from Loipersbach-Schattendorf to Vienna will be possible without transfers. The Mattersburger Bahn is part of a corridor that begins in Wiener Neustadt Hauptbahnhof and crosses the border into Sopron in Hungary.
