Bahrain plans to invite international companies to carry out detailed studies for a proposed local rail network project, estimated to cost about $7.96bn.

The studies include economic feasibility and financial studies as well as studies to determine the number of rail network users and the possible participation of the private sector.
Bahrain will launch the project’s design tender once the 2011-12 public budget is approved.
Plans are also underway to build a 200km nationwide railway system by 2030 and a proposal to include a subway system similar to that in London and New York is being studied.
The underground railway is expected to meet future increasing traffic volumes over the rail network, according to Gulf Daily News.
